other, hot magma from the Earths mantle comes up to the surface. As magma cools by the seawater the rock forms a new part of the crust.

Magnetic strips on rocks and pole reversal
Scientist discovered that the Earths magnetic poles reversed nine times from the past 3.5 million years ago. In the late 1960s magnetometer data revealed an alternating strip pattern of sea floor rocks. The strip runs parallel to the mid-ocean-ridge and it extends hundreds of miles on either side of them. Rocks that formed when Earths magnetic field was in one position alternated with rocks that formed when the field was reversed.

Pangea
Pangaea was a super continent that existed on Earth a millions of years ago. Pangaea separated around 200 million years ago due to mantle convection within the Earths surface. New material constantly comes up between the Earths tectonic plates at rift zones making continents drift more away from each other.
